Contemporary French Impressionist Lionel Magat was Born to Danielle and Henri Magat in Lyon, France in 1972. A shy, sensitive child, Lionel remained silent In his early years, refusing to speak to strangers before the age of eight. It was through these early years of private therapy sessions that Lio was first introduced to art therapy, encouraged to express his feelings through painting and sculpture.

Lio graduated from St Denis private Catholic school In Lyon in 1990, having excelled in sports and soccer, playing for the national soccer team of Olympics Lyon.

Due to repeated sports injuries, Lio turned his interests to more artistic endeavors, attending the prestiged Vatel Culinary Institute in Lyon, one of the top ten Culinary schools in the world. Graduating in 1992 With his BTH as Sommelier and Chef, Lio persued a vigorous career as master wine taster and chef for reknowned international Chef Paul Bocuse, working at top Riviera resorts La Reserve of Beaulieu Sur Mer, Le Cagnard of Cannes Sur Mer, the Griffin Hotel in Leeds, England and the Café de Paris in London.

Following one year of military service in the French Infantry stationed in Alsace Lorraine, France, Lio returned to his native Lyon where he turned his attention seriously to the persuit of his art, partnering with French pop artist Anne Zano, exhibiting in the Lyon City Hall, the Bateau Gallery of Lyon, and the Cannes Art Fair.

In 1997, Lio arrived in Manhattan, NY, where he was befriended by the older Italian impressionist artist Arturo Palma, who mentored the young artist in techniques of oil on canvas and color mixing.

Followiing the death of his mentor Arturo Palma In 1999, Lio remained in Manhattan, marrying New York writer Sharon McGehee and opening their Aspects Studio and Gallery in their Murray Hill townhouse.

Signing with art dealer and gallery owner Justin Osteen in Manhattan in 2000, Lio had his premier opening at the Osteen Gallery at Union Square East on the fated date of 9/ll 2001.

From 2002- 2006, Lio continued to work from his Aspects Studio Gallery in Manhattan, exhibiting at the Montauk Art Fair in Long Island, NY, the Justin Osteen Gallery in Palm Springs, the Cannes Art Fair in France, Splashlight Studios in Manhattan, and the Pool Art Fair, Art Basel, Miami.

During this period, Lio worked with fellow artist Peter Beard at his Montauk Studio and was commissioned for a portrait series by actress Tuesday Weld. Several of his art and sculpture pieces are in the collection of art patrons Kay and Jennifer Leroy.

In 2006, Lio and Sharon purchased their home and Studio in Woodstock, NY, opening their Aspects Gallery Studio. Building a 2000 square foot spa and pool addition in 2009, they own and operate the Aspects Inn & Spa in Woodstock.

Lio continues to work from his Aspects Studio In Woodstock, combining his multi-talents of painter, performing and recording artist and chef and sommelier in what he calls the perfect place for living and working in peace.

Lio’s contemporary French Impressionistic work is especially noted for its brilliant color, a characteristic that become more pronounced when he lived and worked on French Riviera . His subjects are largely female figurative and poetically lyrical, reflecting the peace and serenity of his chosen Woodstock environment.

Recently signing with art dealer and gallery owner Bobby Sharp, Lio is scheduled for an opening at The Sharp Gallery in Oneonta, NY in January 2012.
